7 Vices and Virtues

These are the Cardinal/Deadly Sins

LUST

GLUTTONY

GREED

SLOTH

WRATH

ENVY

PRIDE

Somehow these words have become so terrifying to us and we all rush to church every Sunday and donate to the dish or eat our communion and drink our wine followed by a bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit and a coffeehouse coffee with non-dairy creamer. Or some of us rush to a yoga class to battle their sloth or the local Whole Foods so that the labels “organic” and “fair-trade” can help us feel better about our gluttony.

I would like to point out that there is something beautiful about these words, because they point out the ways we retreat and hold ourselves back from our health, love and success. For each vice, there is a virtue, and these words are as beautiful as the 7 sins are frightening.

Chastity

Temperance

Charity

Diligence

Patience

Kindness

Humility

Chastity forces us to focus on the present moment with someone, rather than losing ourselves in our own fantasies or thoughts. Temperance is basically moderation. Moderation in all things, and this does not mean going from one extreme to the other over and over – that is not moderation. Moderation means maintaining a balance from moment to moment. Charity is helping to maintain a flow of goodness and abundance to the world, and of course you. Diligence is one’s vow to keep expanding and charging forward even though you want to retreat. We have muscles on our bodies that need to be stretched. Our experience needs to be stretched and exercised as well. Patience… because really, what is the rush? Take your time means just that – take it! It is yours! Kindness. This is such an interesting word. That means find yourself in others so that you come from a place of compassion in your relationship with them. And humility. We are all blessed with a voice, or a way of expressing ourselves. The only goal is to share and help each other do the same. Sometimes our friends need our constructive criticism once they get to a place where they’ve begun to make a name for themselves. Other times we simply need to tell them to keep pushing forward. Always do a little of both. A real comrade will appreciate it.

Sometimes you will have some healing to do because of a past decision – make sure you allow the time and resources to permit complete healing and HEALTH. Don’t confuse this with weakness. It is honorable to rest when you need to, and ask for help when you need to.

* * * * * * *

I have finally made the decision to completely eliminate processed and cooked foods. I have been about 75% raw for the last three years. The realization is finally too overwhelming – why would I knowingly bankrupt my body? I love my body. I love my life. It is time to take the proper measures to align with my true self.

Here’s a fascinating video with the one and only David Icke. Brilliant :)

OBESITY CONSPIRACY: The U.S. Government Scandal that’s Really Making You Fat

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

Can you believe this is happening? The numbers below send a very clear message. Inform yourself and others, then break free. You don’t have to suffer the shame, guilt and pain of the Standard American Diet (SAD)! Check out my blog further and the other blogs in my blog roll for ideas about whole food and raw foods.

Best Health to You and Your Family!

Article from www.mercola.com.

A decade ago, an American woman’s waist, on average, was close to two inches smaller than it is today. Eighteen year olds are 15 pounds heavier than they were in the 1970s.

One reason is federal subsidies for food production. Take a look at these numbers:

•Meat/Dairy — 73.8 percent
•Grains — 13.2 percent
•Sugar/Oil/Starch/Alcohol — 10.7 percent
•Nuts/Legumes — 1.9 percent
•Vegetables/Fruits — 0.4 percent

That’s right – just 1.9 percent for nuts and legumes and 0.4 percent for fruits and vegetables. As a result, a salad often costs you more than a Big Mac.

Dr. Mercola’s Comments:

This Treehugger article contains several interesting charts and graphs that are well worth taking a closer look at. But it should come as no surprise that federal subsidies for certain kinds of food will directly influence the production and subsequent consumption of that food.

As you can see in the list above, the US food subsidies are grossly skewed, creating a diet excessively high in factory-farmed meats, grains and sugars, with very little fresh fruits and vegetables or healthy fats from nuts and seeds.

The Root of the Problem
I believe many of our society’s chronic health problems could be resolved if attention was paid, at the highest levels of government, to the root problem – our agricultural subsidies.

If growers of subsidized fresh vegetables were in a clear majority, you might start to see some fine advertising campaigns promoting the consumption of those veggies…

Unfortunately, the Department of Agriculture is deeply entrenched with the agri-business, and current legislations protect the profits of these large industries at the expense of public health.

In fact, the agriculture lobby is more powerful than even the pharmaceutical industry! You don’t hear about it as often, but the ramifications of their political influence are just as hazardous to your health as that of Big Pharma.

Sadly, you also see this influence in nutrition science. It is actually not designed to help you make sound dietary choices but rather to allow food companies to make health claims to increase profits, and this is a primary reason why you cannot get sound dietary advice from your government.

Take the Food Pyramid, for example. Back in 2005, when the updated food pyramid was unveiled, nutritionist Luise Light, a former USDA insider and contributing architect of the original version of the Food Guide Pyramid, exposed how the US government bows to industry interests and plays a key role in the obesity epidemic.

As this recent New York Times article states, “Thanks to lobbying, Congress chooses to subsidize foods that we’re supposed to eat less of.”

US Government Subsidizes Fast Food
The food crops currently subsidized are corn, soy, wheat and rice. What do you end up with?

A fast food diet!

And what many fail to remember (or don’t realize) is that the farm bill has a direct impact on what your child gets fed in school, for example, and what food assistance programs will distribute to poorer households.

It’s quite clear that the farm bill creates a negative feedback loop that maintains the status quo of the standard American diet. Because by subsidizing the farming of corn and soy, the US government is also actively supporting a diet that consists of these grains in their processed form, namely high fructose corn syrup, soybean oil, and grain-fed cattle – all of which are known contributors to obesity and chronic diseases.

(In addition, let’s not forget that the vast majority of these two crops are also genetically modified, which in and of itself is a major health hazard!)

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is perhaps the most obvious example of how the farm bill destroys health, as opposed to promoting the production of food that is actually worthy of being called “food.”

HFCS is in TENS of THOUSANDS of food products. If it’s processed, it probably contains HFCS; oftentimes it’s one of the top three ingredients. With everything we now know about how HFCS and other sugars create obesity and chronic disease, it’s no wonder we have a health care crisis on our hands!

Our federal food policy reaches to the very core of our everyday lives; the core of our health. Unless the food policy is addressed and corrected, little progress will be made to improve the current health care crisis.

The links are clear: These food policies directly impact what and how we produce our food, which impacts disease rates, which in turn drive health care costs into the stratosphere.

The average American is now 10 pounds overweight, which translates into $250 billion in added yearly health care costs, not to mention a shorter lifespan.

Farm Bill Also Promotes Excessive Fossil Fuel Consumption
In addition to producing little else but fast food, this type of monoculture is also very dependent on fossil fuels. Because when you grow one type of crop almost exclusively, you deplete the soil, which means you have to use more fertilizer, which is made from fossil fuel.

Monocultures also invite more pests, which need to be treated with ever increasing amounts of pesticides – also made from fossil fuel.

Cheap food is actually incredibly expensive once everything is added up, including stratospheric health care costs, continued dependence on fossil fuels, and the destruction of the earth as a whole.

Opt Not to Play Along – Choose Health!

If you want to optimize your health, you simply must return to the basics of healthy food choices. And try as they may, industry lobbyists still cannot force you to buy these types of junk foods. The choice is entirely yours, and consumer demand will always win eventually, so the more people demand healthy, unadulterated foods, the more they must produce, one way or another.

I encourage you to support the small family farms in your area. You’ll receive nutritious food from a source that you can trust, and you’ll not only be supporting the health of your own family but the health of your entire community.

However, there is still much confusion about what is healthy – and in some cases, whether or not something is actually food. The easiest way to get confused and be led astray by misleading advertising is by focusing on individual ingredients or nutrients rather than the food as a whole.

In a nutshell, the easiest way back toward health is to focus on WHOLE, unadulterated foods; foods that have not been processed or altered from their original state. Food that has been grown or raised as nature intended, without the use of chemical additives, pesticides and fertilizers.

Whole, especially organic, foods contain so many nutrients that work together synergistically, making them superior to anything that contains only the active ingredient (and frequently as a synthetic version at that).

Now, if you don’t’ know what’s implied by “as nature intended,” then that should be a sign that you have gotten too disconnected from the natural world, and a refresher course in natural farming practices may be called for. (For example, corn is not, and has never been, a natural part of any cow’s diet. You will never see a cow nibbling on a corn stalk when out to pasture, no matter how much corn is growing nearby.)

Eating a diet of processed foods while popping vitamins and supplements, thinking you’re getting everything you need for health, is a reckless miscalculation that will extract its true cost in the form of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Remember, any amount of time and money you save today by stopping at a fast food restaurant, you’re bound to repay later when you’re too ill to lead an active life.

“You’ll come back when you’re ready…”

and here we let the winds and rivers pass between us. We are trees, deeply rooted in the sands of Love. This soil cannot be perceived by the senses, just as the branches know nothing of the roots. As the roots and branches fulfill their duties for perpetuating life, they dance in unison as the energy flows between (above and below ground). Our fruits draw nutrients from this fertile, perfect soil. In order to appreciate the fruit one must taste it. The taste will inspire. The taste will cause you to set out on the high seas in search of more.

…but more is never enough…

By eating the fruit, you become the fruit. But you can never become the tree. You are your own tree, and your roots need fertile land from which to draw.

Suffering is how we come to know this. Imagine the fruit that struggles to get back to the branch from which it fell. Even if it did reach that branch, the branch would not be able to hold the fruit again. These are the woes of each fruit.

Forget the taste of the last fruit so that you may taste again. Love is not the tasting. Love is the soil that nourished the fruit to maturity. This soil nourishes you, whether you are aware of it or not. It does so asking nothing in return.

Dare to taste and become inspired again and again. Otherwise, you will remain obsessed with the same flavors forever. Every fruit perishes and rots and returns to the earth eventually. But the trees… Some trees we keep coming back to, some you only eat from once. Flavors are always fluctuating, but as we know, every apple stays the same in structure and spirit even though the flavors may change between forms.

So forget about me. Forget about me everyday so that each day you see me, and the fruit of my tree tastes different, you won’t mourn the fruits of yesterday. The soil that I draw from is fertile and ever changing. This is what I strive for: I must evolve in order to live.

Each day that you see me, and perhaps some time has passed, just know that I had to lose you to long for you. I had to long for you to write songs for you. In longing for you my branches grew longer so that I could reach better, and I drew even more complexities from the soil. Yes, your roots and trunk are there while mine are here, but we share the land.

We can never be separate.

Travel, but do not become the traveling. Eat, but do not become the eating. What tastes sweet today tastes so because of what we remember from yesterday. Whenever you are hungry, remember: Eat for nourishment. Eat to live. Il suffit d’avancer pour vivre…

silenceoath

One day I decided to take an oath of silence. I chose to do this because I felt that my words were not my own. I was especially stressed during the first few months of my move to NYC. I needed to discipline myself so that I could learn to survive there.

This decision REALLY pissed everyone around me off. I told my boss the night before my shift (with written words) that I would have to come to work the next day mute. She actually told me it would be hot. I sort of assumed she would tell my co-worker, especially since he was working at the time I told her. She didn’t, and when he came in the next day he was not pleasantly surprised and actually TOTALLY pissed. Thankfully, we made more tips than we had ever made together before – the customers were totally cool. It was the people who knew me, people who I thought I could call friends, who wouldn’t accept it and judged me. When the head chef threatened to fire me, I chose to speak again by 12 Midnight. That day we totally kicked ass on the shift though. Why wouldn’t we? I was the best barista they had and all of the orders came on tickets. They said I might have to answer the phone, but that was really only an issue at night when people called for delivery. Sure, that might have been something to handle… but I know that we could have. Didn’t seem right, but I conformed because I was too scared to be out of a job.

The one girl who really supported me was the cutest girl working there, but everyone talked shit about her because she was a “crappy waitress.” She was a good person, but that didn’t seem to matter to anyone. She was cool though, I hope she’s doing well. I think she was fired about a week after my silence oath “fiasco.”

Thankfully today, it is official. World Redress LLC. is a reality. I work for a company of my own creation. That feels very good.

Green Smoothies are Elixirs of Life and Beauty!

Sexy Super Green Smoothie

Life is the space where “things happen.” Beauty is a measure of the balance that can be perceived with the senses. We live in a toxic environment and we must nourish ourselves accordingly. Greens serve to cleanse our bodies and our minds. They are also a great source of protein. The food that has the highest percentage of protein in the world is Spirulina (a green food!). I now value the art of smoothie-making as much as any, especially green smoothies. The Vitamix makes “getting your greens” more enjoyable than ever before.

Ray and I went 10 days on the 14-day Nutritional Fast. I’m really proud of him – this was his first cleanse/fast! Today I decided I’m going to go back on Liquids and complete the Liver flushes (we didn’t complete the final 2 liver flushes). The gall bladder flush that I did really opened my eyes to what is inside of me… and all of us if we don’t cleanse regularly and avoid dead food. I actually didn’t regain the urge to eat solid food and I still haven’t regained it, so this is a strong sign to me that I need to keep going.

Here’s the recipe for the smoothie I had today…
Sexy Super Green Smoothie
2 cups of cooled Kava Kava Tea (Yogi Tea)
1 small sweet apple
1-2 cups of Dandelion
2 Tbsp Lucuma Powder
1 Tbsp Mesquite Pod Meal
1 Tbsp Billy’s Infinity Greens, Sun Is Shining, or Pure Synergy
1/2 to 1 Tsp Maca Root Powder (start small if you are new to this food)
1 Tbsp Honey (optional – I used Y.S. Organic Farms Super Enriched Honey)
1/2 Stevia Leaf
1 Tsp Cinnamon
1/2 Scoop Sunwarrior Protein
1/2 Tbsp Lecithin
2 Tbsp Coconut Oil

This would be a great smoothie for breakfast. You do want to have it earlier in the day. Go to my Basics and Essentials Page for information and links about where you can find these ingredients. And of course, you’ll want to blend this smoothie in a Vitamix Blender.

My favorite addition to smoothies these days is Lucuma, a.k.a. egg fruit. Lucuma powder is produced from the tropical Peruvian fruit that is dried and powdered. It gives a “milkshake” flavor and feel to smoothies. Lucuma actually is a popular ice cream flavor.

Here’s an informative video on Lucuma from Navitas Naturals (a popular brand that you can now find at Whole Foods)…

Green Smoothies are a powerful tool for women. If you want to shape up your body, drink mostly green smoothies for a week to a month. You will feel and look better than ever! They also calm the nerves and balance the mind.

I’m going to leave you with one more Green Smoothie Recipe with Chocolate! Greens and chocolate are great together. The calcium in greens combines synergistically with the magnesium in chocolate to create a nutritiously rich shake to start your day!

Chocolate Green Smoothie for Awakened Doing
1 coconut water + meat
1 scoop Sunwarrior Protein
1 Tbsp Dulse Flakes
1 Tbsp Mesquite
1 Tbsp Cacao Powder
1 Cup of Kale or other greens
1 Tbsp High Quality Oil like Walnut, Stone-crushed Olive, or Coconut
7 Cacao Beans with Skins (remove skins if you don’t have a Vitamix)
1 Tsp Spirulina or Superior Green Powder like Sun Is Shining at Sunfood Nutrition
~1/4 Tsp Fresh Grated Nutmeg

Enjoy!

Very good video from the march against the G20 in London on 3/28/09. (see SOVIET films)

[The G-20 (more formally, the Group of Twenty Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors) is a group of finance ministers and central bank governors from 20 economies: 19 of the world's largest national economies, plus the European Union (EU)... Collectively, the G-20 economies comprise 85% of global gross national product, 80% of world trade (including EU intra-trade) and two-thirds of the world population... read more at wikipedia]

Strike fear into the rich…

The demonstrations continued into yesterday, when protesters stormed the Royal Bank of Scotland in London. One protester died. Many more were arrested. You won’t see an overwhelming amount of press over this event. The number of protesters was stated to be around 5,000 by the BBC, but there is reason to believe that the number was much greater.

The march was largely the brainchild of Chris Knight, a self-described anarchist and an anthropologist at the University of East London, who has been the galvanizing public voice of a loose umbrella group of radical environmentalists, academics and left-wing activists known as the G20 Meltdown that spearheaded the protests… Read full article at the NYTimes

The top is blowing off the pressure cooker. Are you saying “what the $%#&” yet?

Obscene payouts to AIG, Wall Street and banking officials have resulted in violence in the United States and elsewhere too and this will grow until all of those responsible are stripped of their ill-gotten gains, go to jail or both… (Diane Francis, Huffington Post)

The economic crisis is global (which includes the USA as hard as that is for some to believe), and as tensions rise we will see more and more protests in any and all cities of the world. Is our government preparing for these types of protests in the U.S. by establishing an active unit here (as of Oct. 1st, see video). There’s also the promised withdrawl from Iraq by December 2011? What will these troops be called to do when they get home? The estimated number of troops in Iraq is about 142,000 as of February 2009.

We need to do something, and violence is not the only answer. I’m going to speak openly about how it just doesn’t make sense to me that wealth can be privately owned, as capitalism suggests it should be. I will speak of local, organic produce that I do not buy from a “rich get richer” enterprise like Walmart or Publix (for all of us in the Southeast USA). I will speak of how to maintain a healthy body with fresh whole, raw, and vegan foods that do not destroy our bodies or the planet. I will not drown out the warnings from my body with pharmaceuticals or drop napalm on my organs in the form of antibiotics while private companies collect profits. The list can go on and on.

What will you do?

This Is The Best of Times

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Yesterday I posted a link at my Facebook page to an interview with David Wolfe about our current economic situation. I really recommend listening to it. I think it’s the Best Ever, of course :)

http://tinyurl.com/ao8j67

The interview stirred up some emotions, some of them negative about Mr. Wolfe. Here’s my response. It was a private message, but this is an issue we need to be talking about right now, so I’m making it public.

My issue is that there is no value behind our money other than our BELIEF that it has value. The gold standard is out of order. If there was value behind our money, then “interest” would make sense because if someone has loaned this thing of value, they obviously cannot partake of its value until the thing is returned.

What’s happening now is that the Federal Reserve (a private bank) creates money which has no backing, be it gold or any other good, and they do this at will. Then they charge interest, but what interest is there really? It’s just paper. This system can create nothing but debt. Especially when you consider that the more money you print, the higher inflation goes.

Every dollar printed is immediately attached to debt. Our government borrows money from the Federal Reserve, which they create out of thin air and then charge interest for it. And then after they print the money and inflation goes up, that money is not worth what it apparently was, AND there’s interest, too. Our tax money is not paying for roads, it’s paying for interest owed to Federal Reserve.

Our money seems to have value within our current system. Perhaps a worker who has helped with basement renovations would take some other kind of compensation besides money, but he probably had to report to a boss and bring back some cash or else he would be fired and “Oh GOD, where would he be then?” The business owner needs the currency, mostly for taxes (which I won’t even go into), but a little will go to paying the employee so that he can go buy goods from other folks stuck in this system, as well as pay more taxes. All of this comes as a result of our being told that our labor or the goods we harvest have no value other than how many printed pieces of paper you HAVE to put forth for it. Creating this system gives certain people control, and it’s not us.

The stealing most obviously occurs at the highest level – the Cartel between the Federal Reserve and our Government. To us, we think “yeah, of course I need money to buy things!” We’re the pawns in this scheme and people generally don’t question it. Many people think we’re still on the gold standard and that the Federal Reserve is a government agency.

Sure, banks could go back to just banking, but I think the real issue is that our currency needs to be based on something other than private interest.

every time i see her, I look away. i don’t know her name. i will not stare at her face long enough to consider whether or not she looks like a.j. but i do really wonder… why would a woman have 8 babies all at once? if every human life is here as a continuation of a previous life/lives, why do 8 need to occur at the very exact moment through the very exact portal?

is this an example of advanced technology? or are these souls who had to come back and right their past wrongs? maybe they knew each other… 8 monstrous terrorists or 8 benevolent doctors. they either had a great idea which the gods allowed to continue in brand new bodies or they’re being punished and are doomed to repeat the same lifetime until they try something different.

what does it say about earth right now? is it a place where great ideas lead to creativity? or is earth the obstacle course where you have to prove yourself worthy of a break?

if nothing else, is the birth of the octuplets a hint that reincarnation is real? or is this really only important because of the shape of mommy’s lips?

a world of peace is a world without time.

Forget who you were. Don’t concern yourself with who you will become.

Who are you now? Love that person and/or fully forgive them.

Acceptance is a dance – you look better faking it than standing by and smirking.

Do you want to know about me?

I do, too… and do and do and do so that maybe I’ll learn more.

I don’t want to say anything that won’t be relevant later. So this will be short.

My promise to myself and to you is that I evolve everyday with something interesting to say and meaningful to teach.

Let me know how it goes.
