5 Weightloss Tips to Try for 2 weeks with Guaranteed Results…

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

that won’t make you feel like you’ve given up the right to be happy. Because… above all else… you deserve to be Happy and Healthy (at the same time!).

1. CUT OUT SODA AND PASTEURIZED JUICE
Replace with water, Pellegrino, or unsweetened tea. I would recommend not even using Agave. Purchase the tea called “Throat Coat” by Traditional Medicinals. This tea is naturally sweet and adds a nice flavor and sweetness if you brew with other teas (more than one tea bag will make enough tea for a couple of sittings. And try Sun Brewing Your Tea). One beverage that I love is a bag of Throat Coat tea steeped for 10 minutes in a glass of ice cold Pellegrino. The bubbles help release the flavor of the tea, and it’s very much like a cream soda! YUM!

Another sweetener I recommend is Stevia (keep a little container in your purse and you can enjoy sweet beverages when you’re out and about without breaking the rule :-) ). A couple of tea spoons of Organic Coconut Sugar from Essential Living Foods, Raw Honey or Organic Grade B maple are okay after the two weeks. During this two weeks you really want to train yourself to appreciate beverages without sugar.

2. REPLACE RICE WITH SALAD GREENS
Salad is filling like rice, but it helps you get a little extra hydration and fiber – both keys to detoxification and cleansing. This is a very easy transition to make. At home, whether you’re making a grilled free-range bird or a stew, it will be just as satisfying over a plate of greens. Use pre-washed, organic salad greens or serve it over Raw Greens (use Kale, Collard, or Swiss Chard).

How to Prepare Raw Greens…
Wash a bunch of greens (shrinks to about half the size) and dry them with a clean towel. Tear the greens into bite-sized pieces and put them in a large bowl. Give the greens a few good scrunches with your clean hands. Throw a pinch or two of Celtic Sea Salt (less is more – the flavor of the greens is released with this method and they become very flavorful. The salt is mostly useful for drawing out the water and making them tender). Continue to massage until tender. (Optional) Add a couple of teaspoons, or to taste, of Organic Cold-Pressed Olive Oil or any oil you like (try Og. Raw Coconut Oil, Walnut Oil, or a dash of Sesame oil for an Asian flavor) and continue to massage gently until combine. The greens actually look like they’ve been lightly cooked, and they TASTE AMAZING. Add a teaspoon or two of minced garlic and/or dried/fresh herbs to REALLY TAKE THE FLAVOR UP A NOTCH.

3. REPLACE BREAD OR BUNS WITH LETTUCE, CABBAGE, OR COLLARD LEAF
Bread and concentrated protein like Meat or Dairy is the worst combination for your complexion and your figure. The combination is indigestible and mucks up your colon with toxins that make you old and sick, especially when eaten everyday, which is common in the West.

Try wrapping any of your favorite sandwiches or burgers in fresh romaine lettuce (or even iceburg if that is the only option – don’t be embarrassed. Ask the people at McDonald’s to do it. You’re worth it!), red cabbage, or a collard leaf (remove the thickest part of the stem – about halfway up the leaf). I sometimes even bring my own lettuce or greens if I have good organics at home. Bring it in a container in your bag and discreetly pull it out and put it on the bread plate while you’re waiting for your meal.

4. REPLACE KETCHUP WITH MUSTARD (not Honey Mustard. Plain Mustard)
Ketchup is full of empty calories. It spikes your blood sugar and sparks your cravings. This one little change, which will be one you’ll make regularly if you eat out, is a great exercise. Helps you practice preference in a way that really works for you, and this gives you power for the other choices in your life.

If you don’t like mustard, try oil & vinegar or fresh lemon. You’ll be surprised at how pleasing the natural flavor of food is when you just enhance it a bit with a little tartness. On the rare occasion that I eat French Fries, I love them with a spritz of fresh lemon juice and some black pepper. Try it today, and learn to love, not just the taste of foods, but the way you feel when you eat them…

5. SKIP THE SIDE DISHES AND DESSERT
If there’s a side dish on the menu that catches your eye, like the Truffle Mac & Cheese or the Scallop Potatoes, make that the center of your meal and order a salad without dressing to go with it. Your flavorful side dish will give your salad bulk and flavor.

After dinner, resist the urge to order dessert (at this point it is usually not more than an urge, or something we’re “used to”). While everyone else is halting their digestion with cheesecake, sip an herbal tea or black coffee and savor the temporary pleasure that everyone relishes around you. If you must enjoy a particular dessert, make it your meal and have it alone. Desserts are generally tough on digestion and sugar is tough on the liver, and as much as we enjoy them, we need to consider kindness when it comes to our most prized possession – OUR BODY

Bonus: Learn to drink coffee and tea black or don’t drink them at all, and refer to Rule #1.

Additional Bonus: Follow a Kosher Diet for the two weeks, or try Vegan.

After the two weeks, keep up these rules as often as possible. You will see your body and life become more beautiful everyday. I promise!

ENJOY!

P.S. If you think any of these rules are impossible, just ask yourself…

After-Clubbing Confetti Elixir

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

I often feel depleted when I get back from the club and sometimes I’d indulge in dark foods for convenience and pacification. I don’t have to do this anymore, because I know how to nourish and medicate myself in a more balanced and positive way. We can indulge and detoxify and even medicate ourselves with the right foods, any time of day or night. At least, this is what I believe and feel.

Tonight I got home after a great night of dancing at MJQ in Atlanta and made this amazing and simple elixir.

In Defense of Angelina

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

I would say that anyone who slanders Angelina Jolie should be ashamed of themselves. I won’t.

Instead, I say that anyone who slanders Angelina Jolie is ashamed of themselves.

The tabloids and magazines are out of control on this one – this is downright cruelty. She is a human being, and a phenomenal one at that. Angelina Jolie is one of the most philanthropic female celebrities EVER. She’s a talented actress who has progressed with such grace and refinement, from her tragic and haunting portrayal of the supermodel Gia to her stoic, seductive and tough as nails character in Wanted. She has opened her heart and home to children without any guarantee of a future. She does her best to keep her adopted children in touch with their homeland and culture – we’ve seen her take her son Maddox back to Cambodia regularly (she owns a house there) and explore the streets of her son Pax’s native Vietnam on the back of a moped with Brad. She has traveled as a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador to many third world countries, relating to the people there and learning their stories to show the world the truth – they are just like us and there is hope! She has worked with Jeffery Sachs and helped to spread the message far and wide that “yes, we CAN end extreme poverty and it already happening!”

So when I say that anyone who slanders AJ is ashamed of themselves I consider all that I’ve written above. Angelina sets a high standard for humanity, one that is hard to reach from our suburban living rooms or even our penthouse apartments. Most people are not willing to leave their comfort zones to benefit the community around them, or even themselves. In a society of sluggishly suicidal ego obsessed Diet Coke drinkers, yes, we would hate someone like Angelina Jolie. These people do what they’re told, do not take risks, do not performs acts of generosity without thoughts of what they will get in return… and, to feel better about themselves, they bond together and slander anyone who does.

This behavior is absurd and it is amongst the worst evil on the planet. Do we not know from our review of Michael Jackson’s life that this type of cruelty does affect the celebrity in a negative way?? It is a horror how we were so willing to take sides against Michael in a legal dispute that never yielded any evidence of a crime, just to sooth our own egos and unfulfilled, yearning souls.

We are privileged to witness such an amazing spirit at work in the arenas of art, philanthropy, and fashion. I look up to Angelina Jolie. She is a warrior who’s call to make the world a better place is so aptly fulfilled with fortitude, truth and beauty. She has never shied away from experience, and she has never told the public what she thought they wanted to hear. Angelina sets an example for anyone, man or woman, of how to be much much more than a couch potato or corporate cog. Follow this link to learn more about an amazing woman who calls herself “Angie.”

Actually, Angelina is perhaps the more accurate representation of what we all are truly meant to be. Really does make me wonder… how about you?

Peace and Blessings to you, Angelina Jolie, and your family.

Post Holiday Cleanse

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Working on losing that weight from the holidays? Before you get too far into the year with the same less than excellent results, let’s talk…

There’s a misconception about excess weight that does little to serve us in our weight loss endeavors. Many of us think of our bodies as food storage centers or a bag that gets stuffed when you fill it. So someone who is fat is more stuffed than someone who is slim. This type of thinking will only ever get you temporary results.

You may have heard that detoxification is an effective means for losing weight, but why? This understanding is key for anyone who wants to lose weight and has learned the hard way that eating less is only one small and relatively insignificant part. Understand that toxicity and excess fat are two sides of the same coin. In order to lose weight and keep it off, especially as you get older, detoxification is essential.

Wikipedia defines Obesity as “a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems.” Obesity is a disease caused by toxicity. The body stores toxins in the fat cells and will actually produce more fat to store more toxins, especially as we get older and the body becomes overloaded with toxins. These toxins are environmental, self-imposed (alcohol or smoking), or, especially these days, the results of eating SAD (Standard American Diet).

I started the 14-day Lifefood Nutritional Fast last Tuesday January 12th. On Sunday I did a gall bladder flush. Tomorrow and Sunday I’ll do liver flushes. This is the nutritional fast that is outlined in the LifeFood Recipe Book: Living on Life Force by Annie Padden Jubb. The detoxification I have experienced during this cleanse has been the deepest and most intense of any cleanse I’ve done so far. Despite the detox symptoms, the fast has been very easy because LifeFood soups and smoothies are delicious.

After Sunday’s gall bladder flush I started passing a few pebbles at about 3 A.M. Monday morning. I couldn’t believe what was inside of me! There was a lot of sediment and I managed to collect a few stones (yes I used tools and washed everything thoroughly, as you should, too!). Here they are… (Look away if you are easily disturbed!!!)

results of gall bladder flush

Better out than in!!

I’m at day 9 today…5 more days and I’ll share before and after pics. I’m really liking the results. My legs have really shaped up and I’m feeling much more balanced in mind and body. This is so worth it. I can’t tell you how good it feels to get younger :)

Here are some of the treats I’ve been blessed to savour during this nutritional FEAST…

Raspberry Electrolyte Lemonade Chocolate Pear Pudding Green Soup

Raspberry Electrolyte Lemonade (this is definitely as good as it looks!), Chocolate Pear Pudding, and Super Savory Green Soup topped with Spirulina, Nutritional Yeast, and Cayenne Pepper. I feel like continuing with this diet for a while. For one, it’s so easy! You just wash and rough chop everything and throw it in your Vitamix blender. I’ve just set a routine every day to prepare a beverage and a soup in the morning and that usually lasts Ray and me until the next day. I’m not spending as much time figuring out what to eat – this is always a plus with cleansing. I’m mostly using my own recipes and incorporating lots of exotic superfoods like Mesquite Pod Meal and Lucuma Powder. Just make sure you follow the book as to what you should avoid completely. I do recommend the recipes in the LifeFood book, especially if you are new to this cuisine. Annie Jubb really knows her stuff and it’s great to learn her secrets through this amazing set of recipes.

Here’s the fridge with a day’s worth of yummy Green Soup and Goji Berry Electrolyte Lemonade…
the fridge

The basic structure of the cleanse goes Lifefood blended soups, beverages and smoothies for Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and snacks. Vitamins like Chromium and the B Complex (use a superior brand like MegaFoods) 2 to 3 times a day. Castor Packs three times a day until day 11 of the cleanse. On day 4 of the fast you do the gall bladder flush, which involves drinking a cup of olive oil and a cup of lemon juice. Days 8 and 11 are liver flush days, which are the same as the gall bladder flush but you drink less oil. You also take a magnesium supplement and a gentle herbal laxative like Swiss Kriss each day three times a day to keep everything moving.

If you want to know exactly how to do this, get the LifeFood Recipe Book. It is a very healing cleanse and it is truly affective in helping you achieve your health goals.

I really feel good right now. You release so much emotionally through this cleanse, too. It’s so liberating!

Are Men and Women Really From Different Planets?

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

This is a question that any woman who has ever allowed herself to love a man has asked herself.

Why is it that we understand each other so well in the beginning, then we seem to speak completely different languages after the Honeymoon?

It’s because we are speaking different languages.

Our past experience and values determine how we express love and receive love.

For example, a woman from an affluent family with a father who was able to provide material goods in place of affection may find herself looking for a man who will share, whether it be with chores, or his free time. Meanwhile material gifts from a spouse leave her feeling empty as she has come to associate this type of expression with absence or a lack of contact. Her spouse though, is likely reminiscent of her father – he works very hard and thus gives her material gifts instead of time or attention for her the household duties. All the while he feels that his expressions are more than adequate to express his love, as he recalls the recognition and praise his actions garner him at work. She may associate the expression with absence, but in his world he is somewhere doing something that he and others appreciate.

Take this same woman and put her in a relationship with a man who is able to give her much more individual attention and help around the house. Meanwhile he does not spend the time making an adequate living and ends up dependent on her or his friends. This is not satisfactory for her either because she has learned to associate a sense of security with the material provisions.

So what is the answer in this woman’s case… and the answer for any woman?

Come to understand what expressions of love you look for, and which ones your spouse or partner looks for. You can work on this together, but the person you need to be most concerned with “getting it” is YOU. In addition, learn the ways that your spouse or partner expresses love and train yourself to take note of these expressions, big or small, so that you can “feel the love” as much as possible.

So let’s take the woman who’s spouse gives her material gifts in place of focused time and attention. First, she may feel that she needs to be with a man like this because this is what she witnessed between her mother and father. But after she assesses herself and realizes that she has come to look at the amount of “quality time” as the amount that she is loved, she must make a choice. Can this relationship work for her?

Some of us become dependent on the identity that a relationship puts forth. This is dangerous when that dependence is perceived to be outside of one’s control. The truth is that we can never change our men, so this woman can choose to continue the relationship she had with her father, or appreciate the freedom that the relationship gives her in other areas of her life and focus on that. If she can develop recognition, self-discipline and self-respect as he does through his work, there can be a mutual respect that will take these two to a higher level in their love for each, their relationship, and their ability to affect the world in a positive way.

This is what the world needs now.

“On Love & Other Difficulties…

The point of marriage is not to create a quick commonality by tearing down all boundaries; on the contrary, a good marriage is one in which each partner appoints the other to be the guardian of his solitude, and thus they show each other the greatest possible trust. A merging of two people is an impossibility, and where it seems to exist, it is a hemming-in, a mutual consent that robs one party or both parties of their fullest freedom and development. But once the realization is accepted that even between the closest people infinite distances exist, a marvelous living side-by-side can grow up for them, if they succeed in loving the expanse between them, which gives them the possibility of always seeing each other as a whole and before an immense sky.” ~R.M. Rilke

Honor the process and ENJOY! xoxo… c

How to Masticate Properly

or

How to Chew Properly

This is a very important skill and before I share a certain salad recipe with you, I must make sure that you are a “conscious” chewer.

Very important… eat in calm and pleasant surroundings. Resist the urge to eat when stressed or rushed, like when you’re driving or when you know you have to be at a meeting in 15 minutes.

With each bite, envision the food in your mouth. See it swirling around your tongue and crushing between your teeth. If it is raw food you’re eating, fully experience the burst of flavors, textures, and sensations from all the different living ingredients. Do this until the food has disappeared from your mind’s eye. Try not to consider your next bite until your mouth and your mind are empty.

okay. Here’s the salad. This recipe can be three different dishes depending on the preparation you choose. If you know you may not be serving the salad to conscious chewers, you may want to turn it into a soup or slaw. Presenting different textures, especially if your aren’t working with many ingredients, is also a great way to add excitement to a meal.

Pear and Avocado Soup, Salad, or Slaw
(For best results, all ingredients must be organic and/or raw.)
1 Pear
1 Ripe, but Still Firm, Avocado (about same size or slightly larger than the pear)
4 tbsp Flat Leaf Parsley
2 tbsp Coconut Oil (Gently Melted)
1 tbsp Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice
1 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar
few pinches of Celtic Grey Sea Salt to taste (or other high quality, not dried salt)

For Soup:
Blend in a Vitamix. Try to use a softer avocado for the soup. Add a bit of water or coconut water to make it easier to blend. Consider leaving the salting up to your guests. Garnish with a bit more parsley and cayenne pepper if you like.

Here’s what the combination looks like as a salad. Pretty, ain’t it?
Pear and Avocado Salad

For Salad:
Chop the pear into bite-size pieces. Cut the avocado in half, remove the pit, and use a spoon to scoop out bits of avocado about the same size as your pear pieces. Roughly chop the parsley. Throw the three ingredients into a bowl. Add the oil, lemon juice, vinegar, and salt. Toss and serve.

For Slaw: (You can serve this as a side dish, with chips or crackers, or in a nori roll with a savory seed/nut pate and greens.)
Chop the pear and avocado into small bits, or process gently in a food processor. Finely chop the parsley and combine with the pear and avocado. Finish as you would the salad.

Enjoy!

Find Your Path

Monday, June 8th, 2009

I love you all, so I’ll be frank…

If you have a tendency to freak out about “dogmas” saying that the people around you are preaching that their way is the way and blah blah blah… turn the finger around for just a moment.

My experience with people who preach “down with dogma” is that they are usually the ones who are most enslaved by dogmas, either created by themselves or “gurus.”

Because really, if you live a life of freedom of choice, you’re more likely to see the information from others as just that, information. Sure, people get passionate and even ridiculous about what they believe works for them. Let’s take the information and applaud them for being passionate about something besides tabloids or television! And hey, if it is tabloids or tv they’re being “dogmatic” about, here’s a great opportunity to exercise your compassion.

Let’s go back through the history of the word dogma. First off, it isn’t a bad word. Dogma refers to “a system of principles or tenets,” as defined at dictionary.com. The word got a negative connotation for several reasons, one being some less-than-excellent occurrences where people were murdered or excommunicated for speaking against the dogmas of a church. Okay, this is a total bummer, but dogma, the word or what it stands for, is not to blame. It’s people.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love people. But sometimes it’s hard for these gentle, glorious creatures to take on some good ol’ fashioned responsibility.

I felt compelled to talk about this after reading Anthony Anderson’s blog (www.rawmodel.com) about giving up veganism. After a long stint of my trying to fit in with raw foodists, all the while knowing that I would probably never come to see myself as a 100% raw foodist. (I’m not big on labels so even if I did only eat raw food I’d be reluctant to label myself a “raw foodist.”) Yes, I love the techniques used for raw cuisine and I will continue to go periods of time only eating raw/living foods. It really is a beautiful way to prepare food and as I’ve said in previous blog posts, it’s one that we should regularly consider seeing as it uses much less nonrenewable energy, if any at all. My issue is that the trend with the lifestyle seems to be following dogma over listening to your body and considering the principles of alchemy and basic nutrition. For instance, eating whatever, whenever as long as it is a nut, seed, vegetable, or fruit and as long as it never reached a temperature of over 118 degrees Fahrenheit to stifle cravings is less-than-excellent if you still find yourself puffy, pissed, and unable to get out of bed before 9 A.M.

Dehydrating is indisputably better than cooking. Does this mean that one should never eat cooked food while eating dehydrated food with complete abandon? I beg to differ. To a raw foodist at whatever percentage he/she chooses to eat raw, dehydrated food should be treated as cooked food and it needs to be balanced accordingly. Why? Because the act of dehydration removes water from the organic structure of the food. Seeing as all food you eat must be turned into a liquid, the water must be reintroduced somehow and that water will either come from your body or the foods you choose to eat with the dehydrated food. This is where proper balance and food combining comes into play.

Water is also the element that receives prayer or vibration, which is very important for proper digestion. Consider an effectively combined veggie sandwich of cucumber, sprouts, tomato, lettuce, onion, olive oil, and raw Celtic sea salt on whole grain baked bread just as lovely a combination as that veggie sandwich on a dehydrated bread, commensurate with your desire for either and your gratefulness for having it.

Deliberate the frequency a food takes on if the thought before eating is “yeah, I’m overeating, but at least it’s raw” (translation: I do not deserve the best.) or “at least I’m eating raw food instead what those idiots I work with are eating” (translation: disempowerment – my best is dependent on outside forces). These disordered thoughts create disorder in the organic water of the food, and this is another aspect of “you are what you eat.”

When I’m at my healthiest and most cleansed, I’m able to follow a basic schedule of eating/drinking. I’m never ravenous and I just listen to my body to see if I might need some cleansing greens, a good helping of fat like coconut oil, and/or a savory chewy crunch like walnuts or brazil nuts. I can think clearly before I put whatever it is into my mouth and consider “should I actually be drinking something first… yeah, if I take this time to respond to my e-mails [or create a blog post ;) ], that’s enough time for the drink to be absorbed so the bulky salad I’m going to have won’t be swimming in a sea of coconut water (or whatever the beverage happens to be).”

Life is a blessing. You are life. You are consciousness. Praise yourself and the foods you choose to put into your body. You are magnificent. You deserve the best… ALWAYS.

No Time for Pessimism

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

Just watched the movie Home by Yann Arthus-Bertrand. Such a beautiful film with a vitally important message. You can watch the full film at YouTube until June 14th. Visit the channel:

http://www.youtube.com/user/homeproject

As a people, we live under a shroud of fear. The shroud was created long ago and it’s based on a myth.

The myth is scarcity.

The myth started as a means of keeping the masses under control. The negativity of a lie is impossible to harness indefinitely, and eventually it came to envelop everyone, even those who created it.

So what do we do now?

Consider our lives lived in quicksand. The more you struggle, the faster you sink. Calm down and look around you. What can you grab onto to pull yourself out?

What organizations are already in place to help slow and reverse the destruction of our home?

Calm down. Look around you. Grab onto that branch or rocky protrusion that you maybe didn’t notice before in your frenzied state and slowly, carefully, pull yourself out of this muck.

You can do it.
